The city became the capital of French Indo China. The lake is surrounded by splendid old villas and public buildings. In the early morning several of the city’s inhabitants arrive to go about their traditional exercises. The Chua Mot Cot Pagoda is one of the oldest religious buildings in Hanoi, a temple built upon a single column in the centre of a small pond. Legend has it that the childless king, Ly Thai To, saw the goddess of mercy in a dream in which she presented him with a son. Soon afterwards an heir to the throne was born and thus the king ordered the construction of this pagoda and the future of the dynasty was assured. Den Dao Quan is one of the most beautiful Taoist temples in Vietnam and is located close to the national library south east of the Temple Of Literature. Inaugurated in 1993, the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is one of the finest examples of its kind in Vietnam and is so popular that its twice daily performances are completely sold out. Den Quan Than is the richly adorned Temple Of The Great God that dates back to the 11th century and is dedicated to the Vietnamese god of war. Than Vu, who is also the patron saint of the north, has guarded the city for thousands of years. His temple is located on the banks of Lake West. Over the centuries Hanoi has frequently been conquered, lost its status as a capital city and also changed its name several times. But it has survived and is still full of timeless charm. It is most assuredly the pearl of North Vietnam!

FULL DAYS DESCRIPTION BELOW Our adventure to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, through travel company Intrepid. November 2015 We arrived around 3pm in Hanoi, after 24 hours of travel. We quickly made our way to a section of railtrack I knew about, which ran very close through a small housing area. Such character and nothing like we know in the UK! At 6pm we met with the rest of the tour group and got to know our tour guide Ha. http://www.intrepidtravel.com/uk/vietnam/best-vietnam-cambodia-96831

Here you can see the cities where we stopped (south to north) and the distance between each city. 1. Hồ Chí Minh (4-5 hours to Mũi Né) 2. Cần Thơ (Mekon Delta) 3. Mũi Né (4-5 hours to Đà Lạt) 4. Đà Lạt (3-4 hours to Nha Trang + 11 – 12 hours to Hội An) 5. Nha Trang: you shouldn’t stop here – touristy, expensive and nothing special. 6. Hội An (30 min to Danang + 3 hours to Huế) 7. Huế (4-5 hours to Phong Nha-Ke Bang) 8. Phong Nha-Ke Bang (7,5 hours to Tam Cốc) 9. Tam Cốc (3,5 hours to Hải Phòng + 2 hours to Cat Ba town) 10. Cat Ba (4-5 hours to Ha Noi) 11. Ha Noi (5 hours to Sa Pa by bus/8 hours by train) 12. Sa Pa Transport all around Vietnam Open bus ticket We bought our open bus ticket in Ho Chi Minh City at TheSinhTourist office. We were really satisfied with this company. Drivers were nice and reliable most of the times . You can choose how many stops you want to do. You need to reconfirm each bus ride by calling or visiting the counter. Of course it is also possible to book single bus tickets but this way you pay more. Unfortunately the open bus ticket doesn’t include all stops. You won’t be able to reach places like Phong Nha-Ke Bang, Tam Cốc or Cat Ba. So we booked the open bus ticket from Hồ Chí Minh to Huế. All the other stops we made (8. to 12.) we reached by single bus rides or train. We paid 684.000 VND for the open bus ticket (26,50 €/$ 30). By motorbike We met many travellers who either bought a motorbike in Ha Noi or in Ho Chi Minh. It is for sure very beautiful and a unique experience but we considered it as too dangerous. One amazing part of Vietnam is impossible to visit if you don’t have a motorbike: the route between Hội An and Huế (called the Hải Vân Pass). An other option is to travel with Easy Riders: you have your own motorbike rider. There is even enough space to transport your backpack and they organize launch as accommodation. By train Travel around by train is very nice. But take care – never buy tickets online. Just go to the train station and buy the ticket at the counter. The website seat61.com gives some helpful advice how to buy train tickets and how to read a Vietnamese train ticket. In Vietnam there are many people who try to sell you tickets for a much higher price. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT LINKS: Scared of sleeper buses in Southeast Asia? AMAZING VIETNAM, VIETNAM TRAVEL, CRAZY STREETS OF HANOI, PLACES TO GO IN VIETNAM, Astonishingly exotic and utterly compelling, Vietnam is a country of breathtaking natural beauty with a unique heritage, where travel quickly becomes addictive. Vietnam is a Southeast Asian country on the South China Sea known for its beaches, rivers, Buddhist pagodas and bustling cities. Hanoi, the capital, pays homage to the nation’s iconic Communist-era leader, Ho Chi Minh, via a huge marble mausoleum. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) has French colonial landmarks, plus Vietnamese War history museums and the Củ Chi tunnels, used by Viet Cong soldiers. Because of differences in latitude and the marked variety in topographical relief, the climate tends to vary considerably from place to place. During the winter or dry season, extending roughly from November to April, the monsoon winds usually blow from the northeast along the Chinese coast and across the Gulf of Tonkin, picking up considerable moisture. Consequently, the winter season in most parts of the country is dry only by comparison with the rainy or summer season. The average annual temperature is generally higher in the plains than in the mountains, and higher in the south than in the north. Temperatures vary less in the southern plains around Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, ranging between 21 and 28 °C (69.8 and 82.4 °F) over the course of the year. Seasonal variations in the mountains and plateaus and in the north are much more dramatic, with temperatures varying from 5 °C (41.0 °F) in December and January to 37 °C (98.6 °F) in July and August. As of 2016, the population of Vietnam as standing at approximately 94.6 million people. The population had grown significantly from the 1979 census, which showed the total population of reunified Vietnam to be 52.7 million.[126] In 2012, the country's population was estimated at approximately 90.3 million.[7] Currently, the total fertility rate of Vietnam is 1.8 (births per woman),[127] which is largely due to the government's family planning policy, the two-child policy. Vietnamese cuisine traditionally features a combination of five fundamental taste "elements" (Vietnamese: ngũ vị): spicy (metal), sour (wood), bitter (fire), salty (water) and sweet (earth).[183] Common ingredients include fish sauce, shrimp paste, soy sauce, rice, fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables. Vietnamese recipes use lemongrass, ginger, mint, Vietnamese mint, long coriander, Saigon cinnamon, bird's eye chili, lime and basil leaves.[184] Traditional Vietnamese cooking is known for its fresh ingredients, minimal use of oil, and reliance on herbs and vegetables, and is considered one of the healthiest cuisines worldwide.[185] In northern Vietnam, local foods are often less spicy than southern dishes, as the colder northern climate limits the production and availability of spices. Black pepper is used in place of chilis to produce spicy flavors. The use of such meats as pork, beef, and chicken was relatively limited in the past, and as a result freshwater fish, crustaceans – particularly crabs – and mollusks became widely used. Fish sauce, soy sauce, prawn sauce, and limes are among the main flavoring ingredients. Many signature Vietnamese dishes, such as bún riêu and bánh cuốn, originated in the north and were carried to central and southern Vietnam by migrants. Vietnam travel, Hanoi city, Vietnam street food
